What is the “Designer”?

The Designer allows you to make changes to specific parts of your app and add or remove features. It is the tool through which you can customize the vast majority of the content in your app. In the simplest sense, the Designer, like the Defaults tab, is changing the “settings file” of your app and then sending that file to all users of the app. The app then updates based on those settings.

The Designer is a very powerful and complex tool. However, this support document database in combination with practice will make you an expert in no-time. Some general pieces of advice: try making small changes first, save often throughout the process and experiment (you can always revert back to an old version).

First Look at the Designer

To view the designer, sign into your dashboard using your credentials, and click the “Designer” tab under “Content Management”.

Sidebar of AppArmor Dashboard. The Content Management tab is expanded. There is a red box around the Designer tab.

There are four sections that make up the designer, as outlined below.

1. Publishing & Version Bar

From here, you can Publish your current changes, or save them as a Draft (Draft Mode ). You can also revert your current published settings to a previous version.

2. App Outline

This shows the outline of all the menus, menu items, and modules that can be found in the current version of your app. From here you can add new items and features into your app, as well as select them to edit their properties.

3. Item Properties

This shows the properties of the currently selected item in the App Outline. Depending on the item being edited, you can change the item’s content, functionality, and design.

4. Designer Preview

This shows a static preview of the current menu or module selected in the App Outline. The preview allows you to view the changes you make to your app as you edit them. The app will not reflect the changes made to the preview until you hit the “Publish” button or “Save Draft” button above.

The Designer is best viewed on larger screens. Due to screen size, the Designer Preview may not show up automatically on smaller screens. To see the preview on a smaller screen, click the Designer Preview Button. (image below)
